Tar Heels And Blue Devils Face Off For ACC Supremacy

Nov. 13, 2008

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Two of the three teams tied atop the ACC standings will face off Thursday night in the Dean E. Smith Center as the North Carolina Tar Heels will host the Duke Blue Devils at 7 p.m., with the winner having the inside edge towards the 2008 ACC Championship. Both teams are tied with identical 11-4 records after posting a pair of victories over the weekend. Carolina is on a six-match winning streak, tying the longest mark in the past three years. The Blue Devils are nearly as hot winning seven of their last eight entering play Thursday night. Duke took the opening matchup of the season, 3-1, at Duke on Oct. 3. The Blue Devils and Tar Heels are tied with Clemson atop the ACC standings as the Tigers travel to Florida State and Miami this weekend. A half point in the Carlye Cup competition will be up for grabs as Carolina holds a slim 3-2.5 advantage entering the contest.

The Last Time Out
The Tar Heels extended their winning streak to a season-high six matches over the weekend with wins at Virginia (3-2) and Virginia Tech (3-0). With the wins and losses by Clemson and Georgia Tech the Tar Heels have moved into a first place tie with Clemson and Duke as the trio own identical 11-4 records. Carolina made short work of the host Hokies thanks in large part to the play of Lauren Prussing and Suzanne Haydel who combined for 23 of the Tar Heels 41 kills on the night. The defense was key for the Tar Heels once again as they tallied 10 blocks in the three-set win, while holding Virginia Tech to a .096 hitting percentage.

The Last Meeting
Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland registered 10 kills and eight blocks at Duke Oct. 3, but it was not enough as the Tar Heels fell 3-1 to the Blue Devils (11-5, 2-2 ACC) in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The loss was the fifth straight for the Tar Heels in the series with Duke and snaps a three-match winning streak that Carolina brought into the match. Suzanne Haydel chipped in with 11 kills and 17 digs in the defeat as Carolina fell to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
