Eskola Named ACC Co-Player Of The Week

Nov. 10, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior libero Brianna Eskola earned ACC Co-Player of the Week honors Monday as announced by the ACC league office after tallying 48 digs in Carolina's victories over Virginia (3-2) and Virginia Tech (3-0). Eskola hit the 30-dig mark for the fourth time in 2008 with an even 30 against Virginia before picking up a match-high 18 against Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Tar Heels (17-9, 11-4 ACC) will host rival Duke (20-7, 11-4 ACC) Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in a matchup between two of the three ACC leaders.

North Carolina's Brianna Eskola, a senior libero from Columbia Heights, Minn. and Miami's Genny Mayhew, a junior outside hitter from Clovis, Calif., were selected today as the Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Co-Players of the Week after leading the Tar Heels and Hurricanes to 2-0 records in conference play last weekend.

Eskola had 48 digs in wins over Virginia (3-2) and Virginia Tech (3-0) over the weekend. She made 30 digs against the Cavaliers and 18 more on Saturday night against the Hokies. She improved her digs per set total from 4.85 entering the weekend to a new league best average of 4.95. With five matches remaining, Eskola needs 88 digs to tie Amanda Cloyd (Virginia Tech, 2004-07) and Jenny Shull's (Duke, 2004-07) career digs record of 2,200.

Mayhew helped to carry Miami to a 2-0 record with 20 total kills against Maryland and Boston College. In the win over Maryland, Mayhew smashed 14 kills and posted nine digs, two blocks and two assists. On Saturday against Boston College, Mayhew posted her fifth .400 hitting performance with six kills and zero errors on 15 swings in only two sets of action. She finished the weekend with robust averages of 4.00 kills per set and 2.40 digs per set.

North Carolina will host Duke and Wake Forest this weekend with matches on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Hurricanes will also be at home this weekend against Georgia Tech and Clemson.
