North Carolina Wins Five-Game Thriller In Front Of A Record Crowd
Oct. 17, 2003 Chapel Hill, N.C. - In one of the longest matches in UNC volleyball history, North Carolina survived a five-game thriller to beat Duke 19-30, 32-30, 32-30, 35-37, 15-11. Freshman outside hitter Meg Eckert had a career-high 24 kills for UNC in the victory. Sophomore outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis had 17 kills and 16 digs, while junior outside hitter Molly Pyles had 13 kills and 14 digs. The attendence for the match was 16,126, the largest in UNC volleyball history.
The Tar Heels struggled early, as Duke coasted to a 30-19 game one victory. In the second game, the two teams battled back and forth for the whole game. With Duke up 29-28, Wright tied the game with a kill, and then deRoeck won it with a kill to make it 32-30. The third game was similar to the second, as the two teams were neck-and-neck for the entire game. Nyenhuis had two consecutive kills to end the game at 32-30. The fourth game was won by Duke 37-35, after both teams couldn't pull away by more than one point after the 30 mark. In the fifth, Carolina came back from a 2-8 deficit to win the game and the match.
UNC next plays host to #16 Notre Dame on Oct. 21 at Carmichael Auditorium.
