Sept. 8, 2008
Stephanie Jansma had 71 assists in three matches and earned MVP honors in the Carolina Volleyball Classic and is the Progress Energy Performer of the Week for September 1-7, 2008. A senior from Lancaster, N.Y., Jansma had back-to-back matches with 28 assists in 3-0 wins over Missouri State on Friday and Georgetown on Saturday before picking up 15 assists in a sweep of Davidson in the nightcap. She also led the team with 14 blocks, three of the solo variety to go along with 11 assisted rejections. Other nominees: EDDIE ABABIO Junior forward Eddie Ababio earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the Deacon Fall Classic as the Tar Heels went unbeaten against South Carolina and No. 14 UCLA. The Tampa product was the difference in a 3-1 win over the Gamecocks Friday after scoring the tying and go-ahead goals over a 10-minute span in the second half. He did not find the back of the net against the Bruins, but did make a key save off the line to keep UCLA off the scoreboard in the second half in Sunday's 1-1 tie. Ababio leads Carolina with three goals on the season, which is already a single-season career high. CASEY NOGUEIRA UNC junior forward Casey Nogueira had a pair of goals to lead No. 3 North Carolina to a 4-0 shutout win over Kentucky Sunday afternoon in the Nike Carolina Classic. Nogueira pushed her goal total for the season to a team-leading four tallies and keyed UNC's bounce back win from a 1-0 loss to Notre Dame on Friday night. ILLSE DAVIDS Junior Illse Davids scored three goals Sunday as North Carolina opened its home schedule with an 11-0 win over visiting Georgetown. UNC's big win followed the team's second consecutive loss, on Friday at Wake Forest, where the Tar Heels fell 2-1 in a game decided by penalty strokes. Davids was the only Tar Heel to connect in the decisive series of strokes and the Demon Deacons made three of their first four to take the victory. KEVIN O'CONNELL and JACK FIELDS Kevin O'Connell and Jack Fields both tied for 10th place at the Maryland Intercollegiate, the first event of the 2008-09 men's golf campaign. Both players carded two-under-par 140 totals as O'Connell fired rounds of 72-68 while Fields shot 71-69. Both rounds were played on Sunday as the event was shortened to 36 holes after heavy rains from tropical storm Hanna fell on the Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday.
