Tar Heels Fall to Virginia in ACC First Round

Orlando, Fla. - North Carolina lost to Virginia 3-2, in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Tar Heels fell 30-26, 20-30, 30-24, 26-30, 6-15. Sophomore outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis led UNC with 22 digs and 16 kills. UNC falls to 19-12 on the season. Junior outside hitter Molly Pyles contributed 21 digs and 14 kills in the loss, while senior middle hitter Aletha Green had 12 kills, on a .375 hitting percentage, and five blocks. Junior libero Caroline deRoeck added 27 digs and sophomore outside hitter Camilla Ihenetu had ten kills and five blocks. Other Tar Heel contributors included junior middle hitter Katie Wright, freshman outside hitter Meg Eckert and junior setter Norma Cortez. Wright had eight kills and a team-high eight blocks, while Eckert had 14 digs and three service aces. Cortez had 54 assists, 12 digs and a career high five kills. For the Cavaliers, Whitney Ashcraft had 27 digs and Emily Kirkwood had a game-high 70 assists. Lindsay Osco chipped in with a team-high 19 kills as well as 24 digs and Paige Davis had 21 digs and 13 kills.
Virginia moves on to face the winner of Georgia Tech/Florida State while North Carolina will finish its season on Nov. 29 against South Carolina at Carmichael Auditorium at noon.
