Carolina Drops Five-Game Decision At Wake
Nov. 1, 2006 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Amy Beaver had 11 kills, seven blocks, five digs and four services aces, but North Carolina lost in five games to Wake Forest, 28-30, 22-30, 30-26, 30-24, 15-11, Wednesday night at Reynolds Gymnasium. Jessica Furlong led all players with 29 kills to lead the Demon Deacons, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the victory. After pulling out a close game one victory 30-28, Carolina (6-17, 4-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) hit .308 in game two to cruise to a 30-22 win. Megan Owens led the charge in that frame, registering a team-high six kills on 13 errorless swings. The Tar Heels also had five blocks in the stanza. But the offense would lose its momentum, and Carolina finished the match by hitting for a negative percentage in each of the last three games, including a -.071 mark in the fifth. Wake Forest (12-11, 8-6 ACC) outhit the Tar Heels .157 to .062 for the match. Both teams were strong at the net, with the Demon Deacons holding a 16-15 edge in blocks. In adttion to Beaver's seven, Heather Brooks also had seven stuffs to lead Carolina. Natalie Mullikin had a match-high nine blocks for Wake, with Jackie Lucas adding seven. Brianna Eskola topped 20 digs for the second straight match, finishing with a team-high 21. Wake's Natasha Schaefer also had 21 digs, while Ashley Board chipped in 17 for UNC. Next up for Carolina is a Friday night showdown at Duke. The match, which is worth 0.5 points in the Carlyle Cup, is set for 7 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
