Carolina Volleyball Sweeps Wake Forest

Oct. 30, 2004

Box Score

The University of North Carolina volleyball team won its third straight match over an in-state opponent with a 38-36, 30-21, 30-27 win over host Wake Forest Saturday night in Winston-Salem. Senior Katie Wright hit .429 with 11 kills and seven blocks, while senior Caroline deRoeck continued her outstanding play of late with 24 digs.

The match may have been decided in game one, when the Demon Deacons (10-13, 2-10 ACC) pushed the visiting Tar Heels (15-11, 8-4) to the brink before finally giving way at the end. The game, which ended 38-36 featured 16 ties and eight game points. After squandering a 28-24 lead, a Molly Pyles kill ended it to give Carolina the game and the momentum.

After getting out to a lead of 18-12 in game two, the Tar Heels were able to finish strong and put Wake Forest away 30-21. UNC hit a match-high .271 in the frame, and held the hosts to a match-low .170.

Wake Forest took the first point of game three, only to see the Tar Heels reclaim the momentum with a 7-0 run. Carolina would never lead by less than two again, and secured the win with a 30-27 win.

With the win, Carolina takes over sole possession of second place in the league, as Miami fell to Georgia Tech in three.

The Tar Heels will look to run their in-state winning streak to four matches when they host NC State Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
