The UNC volleyball team defeated the William & Mary Tribe, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels lost the first game, 22-30, but responded with wins in the nest three games, 30-28, 30-23, 30-27. With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 5-3 for the season, while William & Mary moves to 5-2.

Three UNC players recorded double-doubles in Sunday's action. Nicole Reis (17 kills, 16 digs), Laura Greene (14 kills, 16 digs) and Malaika Underwood (44 assists, 18 digs) led the way for coach Joe Sagula's squad. William & Mary had four players record double-doubles - Tara Tobias (16 kills, 22 digs), Christina Hinds (12 kills, 26 digs), Laurel Witt (16 kills, 10 digs) and Sarah Gubler (45 assists, 17 digs).

William & Mary took the first game, 22-30, after outscoring the Tar Heels,10-4, over the last ten points of the game. In game two, Carolina trailed, 27-28, with William & Mary serving, but consecutive kills by Laura Greene, Malaika Underwood and Nicole Reis gave Carolina the game.

The Tar Heels led game three from the outset, running off to an 11-4 lead before taking the game, 30-23, on a Holly Strauss block. Molly Pyles was dominant for UNC in game four, totaling seven kills in the game, including two in the closing points of the game that gave the Tar Heels leads of, 27-25, and 28-26. Nicole Reis closed the match with a kill to give the Tar Heels their fifth victory of the season.

 

 

Carolina is back in action Thursday, Sept. 20, hosting Virginia in the Tar Heels opening Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season.
