UNC Volleyball Falls To Santa Clara, 3-2
Sept. 9, 2001 The UNC volleyball team lost a five-game match to Santa Clara in the final match of the Santa Clara Invitational Sunday afternoon in Santa Clara, Calif. The Tar Heels lost the first game, 30-24, before responding with victories in game two, 30-27, and game three, 30-22. The Broncos took game four by a 30-24 count before winning the final game, 15-6. The Tar Heels are 4-3 after the loss while Santa Clara improves to 7-1 on the season. Outside hitter Laura Greene had a double-double for the Tar Heels, recording 16 kills and 13 digs. Outside hitter Nicole Reis led Carolina in kills with 19, while four Tar Heels were in double digits in digs -- Melissa Higgins with 17, Molly Pyles with 15, Greene with 13 and Carolina deRoeck with 10. The Broncos were led by Jami Bari who totaled 18 kills and 14 digs, and Becky Potter who had 15 kills and 12 digs. Carolina opened the tournament by losing to No. 13 UC Santa Barbara, 30-19, 30-15, 30-21, Saturday morning before defeating Creighton, 20-30, 30-26, 31-29, 30-21, Saturday night.
Coach Joe Sagula's squad is back in action Sept. 8-9 when it hosts the Carolina/Nike Classic featuring Pepperdine, Georgia, Wisconsin-Milwaukee along with the Tar Heels.
