CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Brian Kalbas, the women's tennis coach at William & Mary since 1992, was named Friday as the head women's tennis coach at North Carolina as announced by Carolina athletic director Dick Baddour. Kalbas replaces Jen Callen who coached the Tar Heels for two seasons before resigning last month. Kalbas was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Coach of the Year for Division I in 1998 among his many accolades. His career record at William & Mary is 214-85, a winning percentage of .715.

"I am thrilled we were able to attract a candidate of Brian's stature to be our new women's tennis coach," Baddour commented. "He has an excellent record of developing players and teaching the game so student-athletes can maximize their potential. He is a former National Coach of the Year and his record at William & Mary speaks for itself."

Most recently the Tribe went 25-6 in 2003, the most wins in school history. The Tribe has made eight NCAA appearances under Kalbas reaching the quarterfinals twice and final 16 another three times. He has been East Region Coach of the Year four times and Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year five times. His teams have been ranked in the Top 20 eight times, three times in the Top 10. In addition William & Mary has won nine CAA titles under his stewardship.

Kalbas earned his B.B.A. in 1989 from the University of Notre Dame. He played No. 1 singles there for three seasons. He served as an assistant coach at his alma mater from 1989-92 under the leadership of legendary coach Bob Bayliss.
