UNC Women's Tennis Finishes No. 9

June 4, 2003

Chapel Hill ----- The University of North Carolina women's tennis team finished the 2003 season with a No. 9 national ranking and three Tar Heels earned All-America honors. Kate Pinchbeck, who finished the season ranked 14th in the country, earned All-America honors in singles for the second consecutive season. Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline earned All-America honors in doubles after finishing the season eighth in the final ITA rankings.

"I'm proud of our team," said head coach Jen Callen. "This says a lot about our program and the individuals who have worked so hard to achieve these accomplishments."

This is the third consecutive season Carolina has finished among the nation's top 20 teams. Last season the Tar Heels finished No. 5, the highest ranking in school history, and in 2001, Carolina was 17th. Carolina's highest ranking prior to the last two seasons was 11th in 1981.

Pinchbeck is the first Tar Heel to earn All-America status in consecutive seasons since Cinda Gurney did so in 1992 and 1993. Mojzis and Cline are Carolina's first doubles team All-Americas since Gurney and Alisha Portnoy in 1993.

Carolina finished the season 19-8 overall and advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA team championships.
