Tar Heel Seniors Receive ITA Regional Awards
May 11, 2005 SKILLMAN, N.J. - North Carolina seniors Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis were recipients of Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Awards for NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Tuesday afternoon. Cline received the ITA/Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award for the Southeast Region. Mojzis received the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship for the Southeast Region. National winners for women's players will be announced the evening of May 22 in Athens, Ga. The ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship is presented to a women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. Cline's enthusiasm both on and off the court was also recognized in February, when Cline was honored with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Sportsmanship Award at the National Indoor Championships. Cline was chosen by the 16 participating coaches for displaying outstanding sportsmanship and exemplifying the spirit of college tennis during the course of the tournament and throughout her career. Currently ranked 24th, Cline has had a standout senior campaign. The Dallas, Texas, native has posted an overall record this year of 34-8. Cline is 4-1 at the No. 1 spot and 16-5 at No. 2. Cline was also named to the 2005 ACC All-Conference Team for the third straight year. The ITA/Arthur Ashe Awardfor Leadership and Sportsmanship goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. Mojzis, currently ranked 41st in the country, has posted another impressive record for the Tar Heels playing virtually all season at No. 1. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Mojzis' overall record is 25-15. In dual-match play, she is 12-11 at No. 1 and 4-0 at No. 2. Mojzis is a four-time ACC All-Conference Team recipient. Mojzis was also named an All-America in singles last season. In doubles, Cline and Mojzis have formed one of the best tandems in North Carolina women's tennis history. The senior pair, currently ranked fifth, has posted a 19-6 record at No. 1 in dual-match play and 29-7 record overall. The tandem was named an All-America in doubles in 2003. The Tar Heels will begin play in the 2005 NCAA Regionals on Friday, May 13. UNC will host Richmond at 10 am. In the other regional matchup, Duke will take on Michigan at 2 p.m.
