Women's Tennis Named NCAA Regional Host
May 1, 2007 INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The No. 11 University of North Carolina women's tennis team was awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships and will host a regional Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC, who at 21-8 is the 11h seed overall, will face Marist (12-1) Saturday at 10 a.m. in a first-round matchup that will mark the ninth straight NCAA appearance for the Tar Heels. That match will be followed by a contest between No. 22 Duke and No. 36 LSU at 1 p.m. The winning teams Saturday will meet in the NCAA second round (or regional final) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The winner of that match would advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in Athens, Ga. Duke knocked UNC out in the Sweet Sixteen of last year's tournament. The UNC men's tennis team will also host a regional the same weekend with the Tar Heels as the No. 6 seed -- their highest ever seeding. First round matches are Friday and the regional final Saturday. Other teams in the men's regional include Radford, William & Mary and NC State.
