No. 5 Tar Heels Take On Rival No. 14 Blue Devils In ACC Match-Up

April 5, 2006

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina Tar Heels are set to take on ACC rival the Duke Blue Devils Wednesday at the Ambler Tennis Center in Durham. The match is slated for 4 p.m. between No. 5 North Carolina and No. 14 Duke. The Blue Devils post a 5-1 conference record (12-5 overall), while the Tar Heels are 7-1 in conference play (22-3 overall). Duke leads the series over North Carolina, 34-28.

Both North Carolina and Duke came off similar weekend match-ups, each defeating Maryland and Boston College by the same margin. North Carolina edged Maryland on Saturday, 4-3, and Duke posted the same score over the Terrapins on Sunday. The Tar Heels swept Boston College, 7-0, as the Blue Devils did on Saturday.

North Carolina has never defeated Duke on its home court since its opening in 1987. The Tar Heels, however, took two wins from the Blue Devils last year. In regular season play, North Carolina topped Duke 4-3, and posted a 4-0 margin in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to advance. Both matches took place in Chapel Hill.

In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll release, both ACC teams sit within the top fifteen. North Carolina is ranked fifth in the nation, while Duke slipped to 14th. The Tar Heels are lead by No. 34 Jenna Long, followed by No. 57 Caitlin Collins. Carolina boasts the seventh-ranked doubles tandem in the country, the duo of juniors Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long. The freshmen duo of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith sit at No. 46.

The Blue Devils boast five nationally ranked singles players. Daniela Bercek leads Duke at No. 6, followed by No. 29 Jackie Carleton, No. 70 Tara Iyer, No. 103 Clelia Deltour and No. 109 Melissa Mang. The Blue Devils' Bercek and Jessi Robinson are ranked 17th in doubles.

The winner of the match will gain one point towards the annual Carlyle Cup, a year-long competition that awards points for head-to-head battles between the two schools. North Carolina currently leads over competition, 10-8. The cup is sponsored by Carlyle & Co of Greensboro, N.C..
