WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The North Carolina doubles team of Kendrick Bunn and Kate Pinchbeck upset the No. 1 seed to reach the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Southeast Regional Indoor Championships before falling Saturday.

After an opening-round win Friday, Bunn, a freshman from Wilson, and Pinchbeck, a freshman from Edmondson Park, Australia, defeated the No. 1 seed, Duke's Sell/Miller (9-8). The Heels' duo was then defeated in the quarterfinals by fifth-seeded Bergman/Engel of Wake Forest (5-8).

In singles action, Pinchbeck and fellow freshman Marlene Mejia of Lansdale, Pa., both reached the third round before falling. Pinchbeck defeated the No. 16 seed, Duke's Brooke Siebel (6-4, 3-6, 7-6), in the second round before being ousted by Alison Ojeda of Tennessee, the No. 5 seed (3-6, 4-6). Mejia, the No. 8 seed, beat Tennessee's Meiling Parks (6-3, 6-1) in the second round but was then bested by Tina Hojnik of Middle Tennessee State (2-6, 5-7). Pinchbeck and Mejia both won first round matches on Friday.

Bunn, Carolina's other singles entry, was defeated in the second round by the No. 7 seed, Agnes Wiski of Tennessee (4-6, 7-6, 3-6).

The doubles team of Mejia and junior Erin Niebling of Bay Head, N.J., seeded seventh, also fell in the second round, losing to Mayorga/Witten of Kentucky (8-4).

The Heels next take the court for the ACC Indoor Championships, Jan. 21-24 in Chapel Hill.
