Carolina Shines At ITA Regionals Friday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- North Carolina seniors Austin Smith, Sophie Grabinski and Laura Reichert, juniors Sanaz Marand and Katrina Tsang, and freshman Shinann Featherston scored opening round singles wins Friday at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regionals at Wake Forest's Indoor Tennis Center. In addition, three Tar Heel tandems are alive in the round of 16 of the doubles event. Marand, the top seed in the singles event, needed three sets to dispatch Charlotte's Yudeshree Pillay, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Fifth-seeded Tsang took out Louisville's Bianca Gorbea in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Smith, seeded in the No. 9-16 grouping, was pushed to the edge by Memphis' Ashley Murdock, but ultimately prevailed, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5). Reichert defeated Davidson's Michelle Fanney, 6-4, 6-4, and Grabinski defeated Stefi Balda of Clemson thanks to a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Featherston topped Emilee Malvehy of host Wake Forest, 7-5, 6-0. Freshman Haley Hemm also competed in singles Friday, falling to NC State's Berkeley Brock, 6-1, 6-3. Carolina also had great success in the doubles championship, sending three duos to the round of 16. Second-seeded Marand and Grabinski got past Neils Barringer and Diana Mortlock of NC State, 8-5. No. 3 seed Tsang and Featherston defeated Tennessee Tech's Kelly Holtzhausen and Katie Barnhill, 8-1. Hemm and Reichert rounded out the UNC success Friday, topping Andrea Herrera and Anna Djananova of Middle Tennessee, 8-3. Two other twosomes were in action Friday for Carolina. Smith and fellow senior Meg Fanjoy fell to Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck of Memphis, while senior Hanes Harris and freshman Jocelyn Ffriend lost to fourth-seeded Carolina Escamilla and Christine Johnston of Kentucky.
