FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. – The University of North Carolina women’s tennis team captured all three singles flights en route to an exceptional performance at the Fripp Island Women’s Collegiate Invitational Friday and Saturday.
Claiming victories for the Tar Heels were freshman sensation Marlene Mejia of Lansdale, Pa., Greer, S.C., junior Courtney Zalinski and freshman Kendrick Bunn of Wilson.
Mejia captured the "A" Flight singles title with a victory over Georgia’s Zoe Mellis in the finals (6-2, 6-3). Mejia advanced to the finals by defeating Cynthia Clausen of Clemson (6-3,6-3) and Kelly Baskin of Georgia (6-3, 6-3). Sophomore Caroline Hill of Chapel Hill was forced to withdraw from the "A" Flight with a foot injury.
The "B" Flight singles championship went to Zalinski by virtue of her defeat of Lynn-Yin Tan of South Carolina (6-3, 7-6). Zalinski bested Mable Abraham of Georgia State (6-1, 6-4) and the Gamecocks’ Leigh Eichelberger (6-3, 7-5) to advance to the final. Freshman Kate Pinchbeck of Edmondson Park, Australia, defeated Eichelberger to claim third place (6-0, 6-1).
Bunn claimed the "C" Flight title by defeating senior teammate Jeni Burnette of Raleigh (6-3, 6-4). Bunn defeated Georgia State’s Karen Etienne (6-1,6-2) and Monica Pavlinic, also of Georgia State (6-2,6-2), to reach the final.
In doubles action, the Tar Heel tandem of Mejia and Erin Niebling reached the finals of the "A" Flight before falling to South Carolina’s Eichelberger and Tan (8-6). Neibling is a junior from Bay Head, N.J. Bunn and Pinchbeck teamed up to claim third place.
The Tar Heel teams of Burnette/Zalinski and Hill/Cena Hackler advanced to face each other in the finals of the "B" Flight doubles, but the match was not played due to weather complications. Hackler is a senior from Myrtle Beach, S.C.
"I thought we did a real good job of focusing. We had some matches where we were more talented, as well as some tight matches. We were able to stay focused and close out both types of matches," Tar Heel coach Roland Thornqvist said. "We really had a poor week of practice, but I challenged the team on Tuesday, and I’m proud of the way they responded."
The Tar Heels will return to action at the ITA
Regionals in Winston-Salem, Nov. 5-8.
