The University of North Carolina women's tennis team won the top two doubles flights and captured one singles flight championship at the 2004 USTA Women's College Tennis Invitational. The tournament was held Oct. 9-11 at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., home of the U.S. Open.
Fourth-ranked Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis grabbed the flight one doubles championship after defeating Harvard's Melissa Anderson and Celia Durkin 8-5. The win marked the fifth straight victory for the tandem over the weekend. They cruised over teams from Tennessee, Harvard, Penn State, and Kentucky, including an 8-6 win in the semifinals over Kentucky's Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenke.
The sophomore pair of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long won the flight two doubles championship after beating Princeton's Natalie Aronrio and Christine Kaneky 8-2 in the final. Long also won her singles flight, taking her to a perfect 10-0 for the tournament.
The tournament featured 22 NCAA Division I women's tennis teams, including North Carolina, Harvard, Texas A & M, Kentucky, and Virginia. The format included five flighted singles draws and three flighted doubles draws.
The Tar Heels are back in action when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the ITA Southeast Region Championships. The regional tournament will be held Oct. 21-25 and is hosted by Wake Forest.
