Tar Heels Open At Furman Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- The North Carolina women's tennis team opened its fall season with a full day of action at the Furman Fall Classic at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University. Sanaz Marand and Katrina Tsang opened their senior campaigns by splitting a pair of matches against ranked opponents, while UNC doubles teams advanced to the semifinals in flights one and two. Playing in the top singles flight, No. 12 Marand opened with a three-set loss to No. 27 Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. The Katy, Texas, product rebounded to defeat No. 46 Catherine Newman of Vanderbilt, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Tsang opened flight two with a win over No. 114 Dijana Stojic of South Carolina, 6-3, 7-6 (4), before falling to No. 38 Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2. In flight three, freshman Gina Suarez opened her collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Furman's Jessica Preeg. In addition to Suarez, freshman Zoe De Bruycker and sophomore Jennifer Stone also recorded their first wins as Tar Heels. In doubles action, the All-America duo of Marand and fellow senior Sophie Grabinski advanced to the flight one semifinals with an 8-4 win over the Furman duo of Monica Arguello and Lauren Kline. Tsang and sophomore Shinann Featherston also advanced to the semis in flight two, topping Lauren Macfarlane and Federica Suess of Florida State, 8-4. Singles Doubles
