Anundsen And Long Reach NCAA Title Match
May 27, 2007
ATHENS, Ga. --- North Carolina seniors Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long moved to within one win of UNC's first women's tennis national championship with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Ana Cetnik and Anna Sydorska of TCU Sunday afternoon at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Anundsen and Long, the tournament's No. 2 overall seed, will face top-seeded Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic in Monday's final. The UNC duo came out hot in the opening set, capitalizing on an early break to secure a 6-2 first set win. Cetnik and Sydorska, who also lost to the Tar Heels at the ITA National Indoor tournament, would respond in kind with a convincing 6-1 win in the second set to even the match. But Carolina would regain the momentum early in the final set and hold on for a 6-3 win to advance to the first NCAA doubles final in school history. Anundsen and Long, already two-time All-America performers in doubles, join former Tar Heel Cinda Gurney as the only NCAA finalists in school history. Gurney, perhaps the greatest singles player in program history, fell to Florida's Lisa Raymond in the 1993 final. The current Tar Heels, who now have a dual match record of 23-3 in 2007, will face the nation's top doubles tandem in Moulton-Levy and Zoricic. Anundsen and Long now have the two best doubles NCAA runs in school history after last year's trip to the national semifinals. Monday's title match is set to begin at approximately 1 p.m., with live scoring and video available at georgiadogs.com.
