WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.ÑThe 13th-ranked University of North Carolina womenÕs tennis team dropped another close ACC match, this time to Wake Forest. After losing to Duke 4-3 Monday in a match that lasted over four and a half hours, the Tar Heels were defeated 4-3 by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Wednesday.

Carolina started off the match by winning the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and 3 slots. The 32nd-ranked duo of Julie Rotondi and Marlene Mejia shut out Wake ForestÕs team of Haus/Smith 8-0 in No. 2 doubles, while seniors Erin Niebling and Courtney Zalinski teamed to blank WakeÕs Houston/Proctor 8-0.

In singles action, 57th-ranked Julie Rotondi defeated the Demon DeaconsÕ 76th-ranked Maren Haus 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. The Tar Heels third point came from junior Kristen Koenig, who topped WakeÕs Aimee Smith in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

UNCÕs record drops to 10-5 overall, 1-2 in the ACC. Coach Roland Thornqvist was pleased with his teamÕs effort despite the loss. "I thought we played hard, considering how tough our match against Duke was on Monday. The girls showed a lot of heart by bouncing back from a tough loss and playing well against another top 20 team. I think we need a couple of days to rest and prepare for two more good ACC teams this weekend."

The Tar Heels are in action again this weekend, as they host the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, April 7 and the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday, April 8. SaturdayÕs contest against UVA begins at noon while SundayÕs match starts at 1 p.m. Both matches are at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
