Women's Tennis Returns to the Win Column

HOUSTON, Texas - North Carolina's 48th-ranked women's tennis team bounced back from a disappointing 5-4 loss at Rice on Wednesday to win an equally thrilling 5-4 decision from 39th-ranked Houston Friday afternoon. The teams split the six singles matches and then the Tar Heels claimed the match with wins at #2 doubles by sophomore Courtney Zalinski and freshman Caroline Hill and at #3 doubles by senior Sarah Hawkins and junior Jeni Burnette. The six singles matches were split right down the middle. Burnette won her eighth successive singles match by winning at #6 singles 6-1, 6-0 over Houston's Sarah Bolle. At #5 singles, Carolina junior Cena Hackler won her fifth successive singles match, beating the Cougars' Anke Reints, 6-1, 6-2. The two squads split a pair of thrilling three-set matches. At #1 singles, Carolina junior Jessica Zaganczyk came from behind to beat Houston's Galina Seliounina 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 with Zaganczyk winning the third-set tiebreaker 8-6. At #3 singles, UNC freshman Caroline Hill lost a heartbreaker to Lucianne Kelbert, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 with Kelbert winning the third-set tiebreaker by a 7-4 margin. Carolina improved to 6-3 with the win over the Cougars while Houston fell to 4-6 on the campaign. After playing four successive road matches, the Tar Heels will return home to play host to 31st-ranked Texas A&M on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
