Carolina Freshman Falls In ACC Indoor Women's Tennis Championships Singles Final

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The impressive run of North Carolina freshman Marlene Mejia ended Monday with a loss in the singles finals of the ACC Indoor Women's Tennis Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

Mejia, the fifth seed, lost to top-seeded Adria Engel of Wake Forest by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Engel did not lose a set in any of her five victories in the tournament.

Tar Heel senior Jessica Zaganczyk, who reached the consolation singles final, also fell Monday. She lost a hard-fought match to Wake Forest's Janet Bergman, the No. 2 seed, by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Wake Forest's Deacons completed the sweep with a victory in the doubles finals by Engel and Bea Bielik, the No. 6 seed, over No. 2 Laurence Javet and Anna Savitskaya of Clemson. The Deacon duo won by a score of 8-5.

The Tar Heels hope to build on their impressive play in this tournament when they take on Richmond Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
