Tar Heel Reaches Final Four At ACC Women's Tennis Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina freshman Marlene Mejia advanced to the singles semifinals at the ACC Indoor Women's Tennis Championships with two victories Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Joining Mejia in the semifinals are No. 1 seed Adria Engel and Anne Marie Milton, both of Wake Forest, and Duke's Erica Biro. Mejia defeated Catherine Valantin of Maryland (3-6, 6-1, 6-2) and Maryland's Jessica Johnson (6-3, 7-5) to reach the final four. She will take on Milton at 11 a.m. Sunday. In doubles action, Mejia and junior Erin Niebling advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-4 win over the Duke duo of Plesu/Siripipat. They will take on the No. 2 seed, Clemson's Laurence Javet and Anna Savitskaya, Sunday. A pair of Wake Forest doubles squads, having already advanced to the semifinals, awaits the winners of the two remaining quarterfinal matches. In the singles consolation bracket, three Tar Heels are still alive. Freshman Kendrick Bunn is in the semifinals, and senior Jessica Zaganczyk and junior Kristin Koenig will join her with one more victory Sunday. Play resumes at 11 a.m. Sunday. The singles and doubles finals are scheduled for Monday.
