Women's Tennis Turns in Strong Performance in Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina Women's Tennis Team topped off its spring season Wednesday night with a convincing 7-2 victory over the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. With top-seed Jessica Zaganczyk out with the flu, Freshman Caroline Hill stepped into the No. 1 spot and played exceptional. She defeated Jenny Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-4, in only her third appearance in collegiate competition.

"We played an outstanding first match," said first-year head coach Roland Thornqvist. "Everybody did a good job of taking the opportunities and converting them. The whole team stepped up with Jessica being out." Kristin Koening, the Tar Heels No. 2 seed, defeated Brianna Lynch, 6-4, 6-4, while No. 3 Courtney Zalinski defeated Amy McIlhuncy, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Jeni Burnette played a strong match, defeating Ashley Rimel in the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-2, and fifth-seeded Cena Hackler defeated Michaela Quinn, 7-5, 6-4. Tar Heel Emi Shaffer fell to Greensboros Liz Brown, 1-6, 5-7.

In doubles action, Tar Heels' Hill and Zalinski defeated Gonzalez and Quinn, 8-4, while Tar Heels' Burnette and Koenig beat Lynch and McIlhuncy, 8-5. UNCs Hackler and Shaffer fell to Brown and Rimel, 5-8.

The Tar Heels (1-0) will be in action this weekend at the ACC Individual Championships in Chapel Hill. Matches will start Friday, January 22, at 8:30 a.m., at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
