CHAPEL HILL, NC -- The University of North Carolina women's tennis team blanked the Richmond Spiders in a dual match Saturday. Carolina went 6-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles action.

All of Carolina's singles wins were in straight sets. Marlene Mejia, who is ranked 11th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, paced the Tar Heels with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Richmond's Jodi Kenoyer.

In other singles action, freshman Julie Rotondi defeated Jeannette Cluskey 7-6, 6-4. Kate Pinchbeck beat Vanessa Bagnato 6-1, 6-2 and Kristin Koenig topped Casey Cohen 6-2, 6-1. Caroline Hill and Elina Bairos completed the singles sweep.

In doubles play, Marlene Mejia/ Julie Rotondi defeated Jodi Kenoyer/ Jeannette Cluskey, 8-3. Kendrick Bunn teamed with Kate Pinchbeck to beat Vanessa Bagnato/ Monika Peets (8-6) and Erin Niebling/Elina Bairos topped Casey Cohen and Patty Devlin, 8-3.

The final score of the match was 7-0, because Carolina received only one point for the doubles sweep. The Tar Heels are 1-0 for the season and will be in action on Thursday night, when they host UNC Greensboro.
