Women's Tennis Dominates Singles Play At The Carolina Indoor Invitational
Jan. 13, 2001
CHAPEL HILL, NC - The University of North Carolina women's tennis team dominated singles play at the Carolina Indoor Invitational, winning six of seven singles matches on Saturday. Sophomores Marlene Mejia and Kate Pinchbeck won tough three set matches, while Julie Rotondi, Elina Bairos, Caroline Hill, and Kristin Koenig cruised to straight set victories. In doubles action, Caroline Hill/Courtney Zalinski defeated William & Mary's team of Nina Kamp/Delphine Troch (9-7). The duo of Marlene Mejia/Julie Rotondi beat Michelle Krinke/Ziva Grasic of Texas (8-3). Texas and William & Mary were both ranked in the top fifteen at the conclusion of the fall season, which validates Carolina Head Coach Roland Thornqvist's belief that this year's team is the most talented in recent Carolina history. "We've played some really good tennis in the past couple of days. I'm really pleased with the way we've competed," said Thornqvist. "The singles play today was outstanding. This shows that we came back from the semester break ready to play and that we can compete with anyone in the country." The team will be in action on Sunday, the final day of the Carolina Indoor Invitational.
