Men stand first, women second after first day of Nike Cup.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked men's swimming and diving team from the University of North Carolina moved out to a big lead after the first day of the 1998 Nike Cup Swimming and Diving Championships at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on the University of North Carolina campus.

Meanwhile, the 25th-ranked Clemson women's swimming team has assumed a 135.5-point lead after the first day of competition after a magnificent first day of competition.

In the men's competition, North Carolina leads with 341 points in the 12-team field. Ninteenth-ranked Louisiana State is in second place with 175 points, 166 points behind the Tar Heels. Clemson is third with 159 points, N.C. State fourth with 138 points and 25th-ranked Kansas fifth with 129 points. The remainder of the men's field has Kentucky with 88 points, James Madison with 55, Syracuse with 54, Old Dominion with 42, Connecticut with 40 and East Carolina with 19.

On the women's side, the Clemson Tigers have the first day lead with 368.5 points. Sixteenth-ranked North Carolina is second with 233 points, while 19th-rated Kentucky is third with 187 points. Kansas is fourth with 155 points and #24-ranked LSU is fifth with 150.5 points. The remainder of the 13-team women's field has N.C. State with 61, Syracuse with 34, Connecticut with 30, Old Dominion with 15 and East Carolina with six. Three women's teams and two men's teams did not score any points on Thursday.

In the women's competition, Clemson and North Carolina both won one relay event and one individual event Thursday night, while LSU and Kentucky picked up single individual event wins.

North Carolina freshman Katie Hathaway won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.04, beating out Cami Sink of Clemson by one one-hundredth of a second. The Tar Heel women won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:46.82. The relay consisted of sophomore Summer Mack, Hathaway, junior Erika Acuff and freshman Stefanie Rulis.

In the men's meet, the Tar Heels won both relay events and two individual titles on Thursday night. Kansas and N.C. State won one event apiece.

Carolina's 200-yard freestyle relay of senior Chris Jennings, freshman Kevin Erndl, freshman John Spaziano and senior Ted Brisson won in 1:21.87. The 400-yard medley relay of Brisson, sophomore Ethan Hall, senior Tucker Shade and Erndl also won with a time of 3:19.56. Carolina's individual event titlists were Brisson in the 50-yard freestyle at 20.49 and freshman Chris Helin in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:50.83.

The Nike Cup Championships continue on Friday with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
