Carolina performs well against South Carolina, Minnesota, Pittsburgh. November 7, 1998
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's and women's swim teams completed a successful weekend of double-dual meet competition with several strong performances on Saturday.
The men defeated all three opponents, South Carolina, Minnesota and Pittsburgh, to improve their record on the season to 4-1 and 1-0 in the ACC. The Tar Heels had solid meets from several swimmers and were paced on Saturday by four individual winners.
Jonathon McLeod took the 400-yard individual medley, Ted Brisson was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle, Tucker Shade won the 100-yard butterfly and Justin Rossi won the 500-yard freestyle. The Tar Heel men also took all three relay events on the afternoon.
The women were once again led by freshman sensation Katie Hathaway, who won both the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. She won four events in the competition. Fellow freshman Melissa Fiss completed an outstanding meet with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle. Erica Acuff took second in the 200-yard breaststroke, as did Summer Mack in the 100-yard freestyle.
The women defeated Michigan and Pittsburgh and tied Minnesota to move to 3-1-1 and 1-0 in the ACC on the season.
The Tar Heels return to the pool on Nov. 19 for the 13th Annual Nike Cup, held at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill.
