Heels capture four of eight events. October 31, 1998
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina swimmers dominated the Tar Heel Invitational I Friday night at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium, winning four of the eight events, while unattached swimmers claimed three titles and a North Carolina Aquatic Club swimmer claimed the other title.
North Carolina, ranked #16 nationally on the women's side and #22 nationally on the men's side, employed eight freshman swimmers to sweep the 200-yard medley relays for both men and women. UNC freshman Katie Hathaway, a Matthews, N.C., native won the women's 400-yard individual medley in 4:19.80, while Tar Heel sophomore David Slawinski captured the men's 400-yard IM.
Meredith Green, a 15-year-old swimmer for the North Carolina Aquatic Club, won the women's 1650-yard freestyle in 16:33.88. Matt Allen, 19, swimming unattached, won the men's mile. David Fox, a second-year graduate student in the UNC Master of Business Administration program and an assistant coach for the Tar Heels the past three years, won the men's 50-yard freestyle, while his wife, Richelle Fox, a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year for the Tar Heels in 1997 and 1998, won the women's 50-yard freestyle.
