Men edged by No. 6 Bulldogs in a thriller, 156-142. October 22, 1998
ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia men's and women's swimming teams opened up their 1998-99 dual-meet swimming seasons by defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels Thursday afternoon at Gabrielson Natatorium on the University of Georgia campus. The sixth-ranked Georgia men edged the 22nd-ranked Tar Heel men 156-142 in a tight and very exciting dual meet. Carolina came within four one-hundredths of a second of gaining at least a tie in the meet with the Bulldogs. UGA edged the Tar Heels by that slight margin in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the meets last event. Had the result of that race been reversed, Carolina and Georgia would have ended the meet in a 149-149 tie. Tar Heel swimmers won seven of the individual events. Senior tri-captains Ted Brisson (100-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle) and Tucker Shade (100-yard butterfly, 200-yard butterfly) each won two individual events for Coach Frank Comforts vastly-improved mens team. In addition, sophomore Ethan Hall won the 200-yard breaststroke and freshman Chris Helin triumphed in the 100-yard breaststroke. Brisson, Hall, Shade and freshman Kevin Erndl, a Martinez, Ga. native, combined to win the 200-yard medley relay for Carolina. In the women's meet, the second-ranked Bulldogs led from start to finish in posting a 181-114 victory over the 16th-ranked Tar Heels. The Carolina women won three of the 16 events in the meet with sophomore Summer Mack capturing both the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. Sophomore Kristin Lozeau captured the 200-yard butterfly for the Tar Heels. With the victories, Georgia Head Coach Jack Bauerle became the winningest coach in Southeastern Conference history in terms of total dual-meet victories. UNC will return to action in the pool next Wednesday at 5 p.m. when the Tar Heels host their home opener at Koury Natatorium against the Duke Blue Devils.
