Tar Heels score eight points on final day. March 20, 1999
ATHENS, GA. - The University of North Carolina women's swimming team finished in 20th place at the 1999 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships which concluded Saturday night at the Gabrielson Natatorium on the University of Georgia campus. The Tar Heels placed 20th with a total of 47 points. Carolina placed 12th in last year's event. UNC scored eight points on the final day of competition. Freshman Katie Hathaway of Matthews, N.C. finished in 10th place in the 200-yard breaststroke by swimming a school record time of 2:12.29. Freshman Melissa Fiss, also of Matthews, N.C., finished in 16th place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.14.
Preliminary results from Saturday were as follows: 1650-Yard Freestyle-Freshman Molly Sullivan, Las Vegas, Nev., Disqualified 100-Yard Freestyle-Freshman Stefanie Rulis, Lexington, Ky., 44th place, 51.24. 200-Yard Breaststroke-Freshman Katie Hathaway, Matthews, N.C., 9th place, 2:13.07 200-Yard Butterfly-Freshman Melissa Fiss, Matthews, N.C., 13th place, 2:00.35; Junior Erika Acuff, Gladwyne, Pa., 21st place, 2:01.46. 400-Yard Freestyle Relay-Rulis (51.10), Hathaway (50.78), Acuff (52.85) and freshman Jennifer Strasburger, Mercer Island, Wash. (51.01), 18th place, 3:25.74. |
