Tough First Day for Women Swimmers at NCAA Championships

Disqualifications and dissappointing finishes hurt the Tar Heels.

ATHENS, Ga. - North Carolina's women's swimming and diving team had a disappointing first day of competition at the 1999 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium.

North Carolina failed to score on the first day as none of its five entries was able to place in the Top 16 during the preliminaries.

In the 500-yard freestyle, junior Jennifer Strasburger finished 43rd in a time of 4:57.05, while freshman Molly Sullivan placed 45th in a clocking of 4:57.49.

In the 200-yard individual medley, freshman Katie Hathaway placed 17th with a time of 2:01.15, while junior Erika Acuff was 20th in 2:01.71.

Carolina's 400-yard medley relay of Hathaway, Acuff, freshman Melissa Fiss and freshman Stefanie Rulis was disqualified.
