Tar Heels cut into Virginia lead. February 19, 1999 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of North Carolina women's swimming and diving team cut slightly into Virginia's lead on the second day of the 1999 ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday night. Trailing by 45 points after the first day, the Tar Heels cut the Virginia lead to 31 points as the championship enters its final day on Saturday. Virginia swimmers won three more events on Friday evening to maintain its lead in the Atlantic Coast Conference womens swimming and diving championships, hosted at University of Marylands Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. The No. 19 Cavaliers saw six different swimmers finish first or second in six of seven events, and only in the 400-yard individual medley did a Virginia swimmer not challenge. The 400 IM, in fact, was the only event in which a Virginia swimmer did not make the finals during the second day of competition. After 13 events, defending ACC champion Virginia boasts a 31-point lead over North Carolina, 504-473. Maryland is third with 315 points, followed by Florida State, 294, and No. 22 Clemson, 260. NC State is sixth with 238 points, and Duke seventh with 93. The 400 IM did produce perhaps the most dominating performance of the evening as 1997 ACC champion Erika Acuff of No. 21 North Carolina came from behind to win her second ACC title in the event by over three seconds. Maryland-s Kim Piotro also successfully defended her ACC crown in the 200-yard freestyle. Acuff was one of four individual NCAA qualifiers and one of two swimmers to win a pair of titles tonight. Acuff also paced an 800 freestyle relay team that won the night-s final relay. She was the only NCAA automatic qualifier from outside of the 100-yard breaststroke event. A trio of freshmen paced the field in the 100-yard breaststroke event, with Virginia's Danica Wizniuk and Kate Slonaker finishing first and third around Katie Hathaway of North Carolina. Earlier in the night, Wizniuk qualified alongside poolmates Meghan Iffland, Kori Foster and Rebecca Cronk while capturing the 200-yard medley relay and meeting the NCAA standard. Friday evening saw five individual champions and two relay teams crowned. Here is a look at the night-s events in chronological sequence: Virginia opened the second evening of the ACC championships with an NCAA qualifying time of 1:40.69 to capture the 200 medley relay. The Cavalier quartet of Meghan Iffland, Danica Wizniuk, Kori Forster and Rebecca Cronk swam past challengers from North Carolina, Maryland and Florida State, each of which broke the existing pool record, themselves, while posting NCAA provisional times. Straight from swimming the third leg of UNC-s medley relay in the opening race, Tar Heel junior Erika Acuff won her second race of the meet while winning her second ACC title in the 400-yard IM. Acuff trailed Clemson-s Cami Sink early in the race before sprinting to win her second title in two nights in record fashion. Acuff captured the 400 IM title in a meet record and NCAA-qualifying time of 4:16.04, over three seconds better than the competition. Acuff also held the previous ACC meet record and the win was her sixth individual ACC championship over the past three years. Virginia maintained its slim lead over North Carolina in the third event as teammates Meg McCubbins and Kori Forster finished 1-2 in the 100-yard fly. Melissa Fiss and Ilana Kavadlo of the Tar Heels finished 4-5 in the event with Kavadlo clocking a career best 56.32. Maryland's Kim Piotro became just the second Terrapin to successfully defend an ACC title in swimming when she won the 200-yard freestyle for the second straight year. Piotro beat Emily Trakas of Virginia to boost the Terps into third place after 10 events. Carolina junior Jennifer Strasburger clocked a career best time of 1:49.22 to finish fourth in the event. Freshman Stefanie Rulis also had a personal best in finishing 10th in 1:50.32. In the fastest event of the evening, three freshmen each qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke. Virginia's Wizniuk and Kate Slonaker finished first and third around Katie Hathaway of North Carolina. Hathaway's time of 1:01.67 was a personal best for the phenomenal freshman and it also established a University record in the event. A fourth freshman, Maryland's Rachel Handshu, finished seventh. Wizniuk won in an ACC record time of 1:00.52 to clock her second win of the evening. In the final individual event of the night, Clemson's Jennifer Mihalik outdistanced Meghan Iffland of Virginia to capture the 100-yard backstroke. Mihalik's 55.48 set an ACC meet record. Carolina had three swimmers finish in the top eight of the event, with freshman Heather Stiles clocking a career best 56.19 to finish fifth. Acuff, Hathaway, Rulis and Strasburger led North Carolina to a title in the 800 freestyle relay to close the night's competition. Virginia was second with both teams beating the previous ACC meet record. Carolina's time of 7:18.12 edged the Wahoos by only two-tenths of a second and it prevented the possibility that Virginia would sweep all five relay championships at the meet. The time was also a UNC school record, breaking the previous mark of 7:19.51 set last year.
