Tar Heels in Second Place After First Day of ACC Championships

Women's swimming & diving is led by Acuff's three-peat.

February 19, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Led by junior Erika Acuff's third successive Atlantic Coast Conference championship performance in the 200-yard individual medley, the North Carolina women's swimming and diving team stands in second place after the first day of the 1999 ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.

The defending ACC champion Virginia Cavaliers won four of six events on Thursday night and moved into first place after day one with 252 points. The Tar Heels are in second place with 207 points. Carolina showed slight improvement from last year's championship performance when it was 66 points behind the Wahoos after the first day of competition. UNC trails by only 45 points after day one this year.

The rest of the field is fairly tightly bunched with Florida State in third place with 147 points, Maryland in fourth place with 143 points, Clemson in fifth place with 115 points and N,C. State in sixth place with 110 points. Duke brings up the rear of the field with 24 points.

Acuff, a junior from Gladwyne, Pa., won her third successive ACC title in the 200 IM on Thursday night. It was also her fifth ACC individual title in the last three years. She touched in 2:00.88, an automatic NCAA qualifying time. She edged out freshman teammate Katie Hathaway of Matthews, N.C., who finished second in 2:01.17. That time was a career best for Hathaway.

Carolina placed three swimmers in the championship final of both the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley, but failed to score in the top eight in either the 50-yard freestyle or the one-meter diving competition.

Freshman Melissa Fiss of Matthews, N.C. finished as the runnerup in the 500-yard freestyle, cutting over sevens seconds off her previous career best in finishing in 4:50.25. Junior Jennifer Strasburger of Mercer Island, Wash. Finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a career best time of 4:52.38, nearly three seconds better than her previous best time.

Other career best times that were turned in during Thursday night's session were by freshman Allison Terrill (Roswell, Ga.) in the 200-yard individual medley and freshman Stefanie Rulis (Lexington, Ky.) in the 50-yard freestyle.

Action continues Friday with preliminaries at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m.
