Men's and women's teams sweep WolfPack in Raleigh. February 5, 1999
RALEIGH, N.C. - The University of North Carolinas nationally-ranked mens and womens swimming teams ended their dual meet seasons on Friday night by sweeping the arch-rival North Carolina State Wolfpack in Raleigh. UNCs 18th-ranked women broke a three-meet Atlantic Coast Conference dual-meet losing streak by beating the Wolfpack 182-118. The win kept alive a long winning streak for the Tar Heel women over the Wolfpack. The last time Carolina lost to N.C. State in womens swimming was 1981. With the win, Carolina ended its dual-meet season 7-4-1 overall, 2-3 in the ACC. N.C. State fell below .500 with the loss, ending the regular season at 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the ACC. The ACC Womens Swimming Championships are February 18-20 at College Park, Md. UNC freshman Katie Hathaway had the highlight swims of the womens meet, setting N.C. State pool records in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:04.26 and in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:17.28. The Tar Heel men, ranked 14th nationally, finished a magnificent regular season by coming from behind to defeat the Wolfpack 124-119. UNC had not won in dual meet competition at Raleigh since the 1993 season. With the win, Carolina improved to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. The Wolfpack fell to 9-3 overall and 3-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels trailed early in the meet by as many as 17 points at 36-19 after the third event. The Wolfpack maintained the lead through the eighth of 13 events before Carolina outscored the Pack 15-4 in the 200-yard backstroke to take an 88-81 lead that it never relinquished. The Tar Heels put the meet out of reach by sweeping the 200-yard breastroke 1-2-3 to claim a 120-106 lead with one event remaining. The six-time defending ACC champion Tar Heel mens swimming team will be going for its seventh straight ACC championship at the conference meet in College Park, Md., February 25-27, 1999.
