No. 20 Carolina Welcomes Georgia Tech This Weekend

April 21, 2006

Tar Heels Return Home In First Place: No. 20 North Carolina (44-12, 11-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) will host its first ACC series in almost a month this weekend as the Tar Heels take on Georgia Tech. Carolina has won all five of its ACC series so far in 2006, taking two of three at Florida State, two of three at home against Maryland, sweeping three games at Virginia, winning two of three at Boston College and winning two of three at Virginia Tech.

Carolina Eyeing Wins Record: With a sweep of Gardner-Webb Thursday, UNC improved to 44-12 and moved to within three wins of the school record in that category. The record for wins is 47, set by the 2000 squad that finished 47-17. Carolina also has a winning percentage of .786, ahead of the school record mark of .760 (36-11-1) set in 1987. The Tar Heels have reached 40 wins on seven occasions - 1992, 1993, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2006.

Last Season Against Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets took two out of three games from the Tar Heels in the 2005 series played in Atlanta. Tech rolled in game one, 12-2 in five innings, before UNC took game two, 6-4 in eight innings. The Jackets secured the series win with a 4-0 victory in the rubber game.

Last Time Out: Carolina improved to a sparkling 21-4 on the road with a two-game sweep of Gardner-Webb, 2-0 and 6-1.

Carolina In The Top 25: UNC is ranked 20th in the most recent USA Today/NFCA Top 25, the team's highest ranking to date. The Feb. 15 ranking was the first Tar Heel appearance in the USA Today/NFCA poll in program history.
