CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Georgia Tech and Virginia went undefeated, and Maryland and North Carolina were winless Saturday in the first day of Tar Heel Invitational play at the UNC Softball Complex. Action continues Sunday, with the opening game beginning at 10 a.m.
Georgia Tech defeated Maryland 5-1 and North Carolina 8-5 to improve to 37-9 on the season. Virginia beat Maryland 7-5 and UNC 4-3 to improve to 35-14. Maryland fell to 22-15, while UNC is 23-21.
On Sunday, Georgia Tech and Virginia face off at 10 a.m. and North Carolina meets Maryland at noon. The championship and consolation games will be played at 2 p.m.
Game 1: Virginia 7, Maryland 5
Senior Kristen Dennis went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run as Virginia overcame a 5-0 head start by Maryland. With four runs on five hits in the top of the first and another run in the second, the Terrapins held a commanding lead before Virginia got on the board in the bottom of the second. The Cavaliers won the game with four runs in the fourth inning. After M.K. White reached on an error and Kelly McCabe got on with a single, Ruby Rojas hit a three-run homer over the left field fence. Maryland pulled starter Amanda Bettker in favor of Monica Cyphert, but Dennis came to the plate next and blasted a solo homer to center for the winning margin.
Game 2: Georgia Tech 5, Maryland 1
The Yellow Jackets had nine hits and capitalized on two Maryland errors to take a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, when the Terrapins scored their only run. Georgia Tech's biggest inning was the third, when Tara Knudsen led off with her second double of the game and scored on Lindsay Wood's single. After Soraya Reddick singled, Wood scored on a throwing error. Reddick then came home on a double by Tasha Waugh.
Game 3: Virginia 4, North Carolina 3
UNC led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, when the Cavaliers used four hits to win the game. The Tar Heels scored all their runs in the top of the third. With two outs, Quinn Porter walked then Natalie Anter homered to put UNC up 2-0. Back-to-back doubles by Kelly Ramsey and Jessica Young gave Carolina its third run. Virginia got one run in the bottom of the inning when Kristen Dennis hit her second home run of the day.
In the seventh inning, Virginia opened with a single by Tracy Sherman and a double by M.K. White. Heather Field then doubled to center for one RBI. With the bases loaded and one out, Dennis hit a two-RBI single to win the game for the Cavaliers. For the game, she was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.
Game 4: Georgia Tech 8, North Carolina 5
In the top of the first inning, the Yellow Jackets scored five runs on two hits and two errors to take the lead for good. After Tech added three more in the top of the sixth, including a two-run homer by Tara Knudsen, UNC scored all of its runs in the bottom of the inning. Relief pitcher

Natalie Anter hit a three-run shot over the left field fence. The home run was Anter's 11th of the season, giving her UNC's single-season record as she celebrated her 22nd birthday.
