Bolowich, Dorrance Named Regional Coaches of the Year

Dec. 18, 2001

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina, with men's soccer head coach Elmar Bolowich and women's coach Anson Dorrance both earning South Region honors, is the only NCAA Division I university that can boast two NSCAA/adidas Regional Coaches of the Year in 2001. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced the winners late Monday.

Bolowich led Carolina to the 2001 NCAA Men's College Cup championship on Dec. 16 with a 2-0 win over Indiana in title game. Dorrance's Tar Heel women fell to Santa Clara, 1-0, in the women's final on Dec. 16. The 2001 season marked the first time in NCAA Tournament history that one school has had both its men's and women's coaches lead their teams to the College Cup championship game.

The Tar Heel men tied a school record by winning 21 games on the way to capturing the first national championship in the program's history this season. The women posted a record of 24-1, losing to Santa Clara in the championship game.
