Five Tar Heels Tapped For All Region Team

Dec. 11, 2002

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Five members of North Carolina's 2002 ACC champion and NCAA semifinalist women's soccer team were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region Team Thursday. Senior defender Leslie Gaston, junior defender Catherine Reddick and freshman forward Lindsay Tarpley were named to the first team while junior forward Alyssa Ramsey and senior goalkeeper Jenni Branam were named to the third team.

Gaston (Montgomery, Ala.) and Reddick (Birmingham, Ala.) led one of the top defenses in the country, a unit which limited opponents to only 0.68 goals per game. Gaston started all 26 games for the Tar Heels while Reddick also proved an effective scorer with six goals and five assists despite playing in only 17 games because of her commitments with the United States National Team. Tarpley (Kalamazoo, Mich.) was the top rookie in the ACC this season and she ended up as the leading scorer for the 21-2-4 Tar Heels. Tarpley finished with 16 goals and 15 assists for 47 points in 25 games.

Ramsey had another magnificent season for UNC as the Cornelius, N.C. native led the team with 17 goals and was the second-leading scorer with 46 points. Branam (Placentia, Calif.) played in 19 games for UNC, starting 15. She had an 11-1-2 record, an 0.46 goals against average and a .829 save percentage.
