Overtime Thriller Sends UNC To College Cup

Nov. 28, 2008

North Carolina needed a late rally to advance to the 2008 NCAA Women's College Cup semifinal, beating Texas A&M 2-1 in double overtime before 2,686 fans at Fetzer Field. The Aggies took the lead with just 9:34 left in the game on a goal by Laura Grace Robinson, but the score seemed to enliven the Tar Heel side more than anything else that had happened in the first 80:26 of the match. The newly-energized Tar Heel team outshot the Aggies 9-1 in the remaining 21 minutes of the match and scored twice to move on to Wake Med Soccer Park next Friday for the NCAA semifinals. Just 1:23 after A&M took the lead, the Tar Heels tied the score on Courtney Jones' 13th goal of the season as she knocked home a rebound off Allie Long's shot which hit the crossbar. The Tar Heels had several more outstanding chances to score before Ali Hawkins ended the match with her third goal of the season at 101:26, driving a shot from the eight-yard line into the lower left corner for the victory.
