O'Reilly Named Hardee's Carolina Student-Athlete of the Week
Nov. 15, 2004 Sophomore forward Heather O'Reilly scored a goal and assisted on four other scores to lead the Tar Heels to a 6-0 win over William and Mary in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and is the Hardee's Student-Athlete of the Week for November 8-14, 2004. O'Reilly figured in five of North Carolina's six goals as the No. 1 seeded Tar Heels whitewashed William & Mary 6-0 in the second round of the NCAA Women's College Cup last Saturday. The East Brunswick, N.J., native scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season while also assisting on four other Tar Heel goals. The four assists tied the NCAA Tournament record for assists in a game, a record she now shares with fellow Tar Heels Cindy Parlow, Jena Kluegel and Lindsay Tarpley. Other Nominees: FOOTBALL Darian Durant completed 18 of 36 attempts for 225 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning 45-yard pass to Jesse Holley with 36 seconds remaining, in Carolina's 31-24 victory over Wake Forest. Durant also rushed for a touchdown, dragging Deacon defenders into the end zone after seemingly getting stopped at the three-yard line. Durant also completed a two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Justin Phillips. Despite eight dropped passes, Durant had his 20th career 200-yard game and led the Tar Heels to their fifth victory of the season, matching the combined total of the previous two seasons. FOOTBALL Jason Brown graded out at 93 percent, had eight knockdown blocks and led an offensive line that blocked for 400 total yards in Carolina's 31-24 victory over Wake Forest. Brown was also a major reason why quarterback Darian Durant scored from three yards out in the third quarter. After Durant seemed to stop at the three-yard line, Brown literally pushed Durant and several Demon Deacon defenders the final three yards for the touchdown. FOOTBALL Making just his third start of the season, middle linebacker Doug Justice had a game-high 12 tackles, including three tackles for losses of 17 yards and one sack, in Carolina's win over Wake Forest. He had nine solo stops and three assists. Justice, the up-back on Carolina's punt team, also had a 3-yard run on a faked punt in the fourth quarter. Justice made his first career sack (a 10-yard loss) in the first quarter on a pass play by Wake's wide receiver Nate Morton. North Carolina held Wake Forest to 335 yards, the fewest the Tar Heel defense has allowed this season. MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING Chad Ames posted a pair of first-place individual finishes in leading North Carolina to a 213-84 victory over Duke, Carolina's 68th successive dual meet victory over the Blue Devils. Ames' time in the 200-yard butterfly was the seventh fastest in the ACC this season and his time in the 100-yard butterfly also ranks seventh in the conference so far this year. Ames also had the fastest split of any swimmer in the butterfly in the 200-yard medley relay. WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING Kelly Woodruff posted a career best time in the 400-yard individual medley at 4:20.85, also an NCAA "B" qualifying time for 2005, as the Tar Heel women's swimming and diving team defeated Duke for the 31st straight time without a loss in dual-meet competition, 199-94. Woodruff's time was also the second fastest time this season in the ACC in the 400 IM. CROSS COUNTRY Junior Carol Henry took the individual championship at the NCAA Region III Championships Saturday with a winning time of 19:57.5. Henry helped the eighth-ranked Tar Heels finish third overall in the team competition. Henry's time was her career-best over 6,000 meters. By virtue of finishing in the top four overall, Henry and teammate Erin Donohue receive automatic individual bids to the NCAA Championships to be held Monday, Nov. 22, at Indiana State University. MEN'S SOCCER Rhea scored in both of Carolina's ACC Tournament games last week - a win
over NC State and a semifinal loss to Maryland. He netted the game-winner
against the Wolfpack off a Blake Beach assist in the 73rd minute, and put
the Tar Heels up 1-0 against the Terps when he connected off a free kick in
the 54th minute of play. For his efforts, Rhea was named to the ACC
All-Tournament Team along with teammate Jamie Watson.
