Nogueira Earns Player of Year From Top Drawer Soccer

Nov. 13, 2008

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's Casey Nogueira is the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's College Player of the Season, highlighting the web site's annual Team of the Season, released Wednesday. Two other Tar Heels, junior midfielder Tobin Heath and senior midfielder Yael Averbuch, join Nogueira on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Season first team squad.

Nogueira, who led the ACC-winning Tar Heels' offensive effort with 21 goals this season, also has perhaps the widest array of ball skills of any American women's player today in a release from the editors of TopDrawerSoccer.com. She is a veteran of the 2006 U20 Women's World Cup.

Nogueira is one of three North Carolina players on the 12-player 1st team, joined by midfielder Yael Averbuch (last year's Player of the Season) and Olympic gold medalist Tobin Heath. Unbeaten and top-ranked and top-NCAA seeded Notre Dame also has three players on the 1st team, including defender Carrie Dew, midfielder Brittany Bock and forward Kerri Hanks.

Michigan State forward Laura Heyboer is the TopDrawerSoccer.com Rookie of the Season. The former Bloomfield Force standout took the Big 10 by storm this year, recording 19 goals and 9 assists while helping lead the Spartans to an NCAA Tournament berth.

Stanford placed three players on the 12-player All-Rookie Team, including defender Camille Levin, midfielder Teresa Noyola and forward Lindsay Taylor. Portland and Boston College also played two players each on the 1st Team. The Pilots have defender Michelle Olivier and forward Danielle Foxhoven, while the Eagles place midfielder Julia Bouchelle and goalkeeper Jillian Mastroanni.

Freshmen are not eligible for the Team of the Season, only the All-Rookie team.
