Washington Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Sophomore forward Nikki Washington earned MVP honors in leading Carolina to the ACC Women's Soccer championship and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for Nov. 5-11, 2007. Washington led the Tar Heels to their 18th ACC title in the last 19 years, beating Florida State 1-0 in the finals. Washington, a native of Mesquite, Texas, scored the game-winning goals against Clemson in the quarterfinals and Florida State in the finals. She also had the game-tying goal in the second half of the semifinals against Virginia, allowing the Tar Heels to eventually advance to the championship game on penalty kicks.

Van Beek scored the gamewinner as No. 1 UNC beat No. 7 James Madison Sunday in an NCAA Tournament second-round game to advance to the program's 13th final four. Van Beek's goal came in the 62nd minute of play and the Tar Heels held onto the lead for a 1-0 win and their school-record 15th shutout of the season.

TYLER HARRIS

Freshman, Richmond, Va.

Freshman Tyler Harris won a trio of events to lead the North Carolina Tar Heels to a dual meet win over the Duke Blue Devils 177-113 in UNC's conference opener last Saturday. Harris' time in the 200 breast equals the third fastest swum this season in the ACC. His time in the 200 IM is also the third fastest time in the conference this season.

KELSEY MORRISSY

Senior, Horsham, Pa.

Kelsey Morrissy led Carolina to its first conference dual meet win of the season as the Tar Heels defeated Duke 178-115. Morrissy anchored the 400 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay to the top times in their events with the 400 medley relay team establishing a Duke pool record in the process. Morrissy won the 50 freestyle in 23.23 and the 100 freestyle in 50.58. Morrissy's time in the 50 is the second fastest in the ACC this season and she improved what was already her conference best time of 50.62 in the 100 free to 50.58.

 

 

NICK STABILE
Wrestling, 141 pounds
Freshman, Lenhartsville, Pa.

One of 12 Tar Heels to post top-five finishes Sunday in the Freshman/Sophomore Division at the Michigan State Open, redshirt freshman Nick Stabile allowed just two points over four bouts en route to the 141-pound title. He opened the tourney with a major decision over Marcel Clopton of Kent State and recorded a pin of Michigan's Mark Beaudry in just 2:35 in the final. Stabile finished with a perfect 4-0 mark on the day.
