Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete Of The Week: Leslie Gaston
Nov. 11, 2002
Other Nominees: Trystan Meniane, a senior from Martinique, France, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships, upsetting the seventh seed along the way. Menaine was the first player from Carolina to reach the quarterfinal round since 1992 when Roland Thornqvist won the tournament. Sam Aiken, a senior wide receiver from Kenansville, N.C., had eight catches for 58 yards against Clemson. Aiken surpassed Na Brown as the top single-season receiver in UNC history. With two games to play, Aiken already has 58 catches, three more than Brown made in both 1997 and 1998. Abby Spector, a senior women's golfer from Waterville, Maine, captured the first victory of her collegiate career last week at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate in Southern Pines, N.C. Spector carded a five-over-par 218 total after firing rounds of 76-70-72. Her 70 in the second round was one of only two sub-par rounds posted during the 54-hole event which was played at the Pine Needles Golf Club, a par 71, 6,017-yard layout. Spector finished one stroke ahead of teammate Ashley Prange and two shots in front of another teammate, Meghan Adams. Marcus Storey, a sophomore from Missouri City, Texas, scored the game-winning goal in the tar Heels' 2-0 men's soccer win over 24th-ranked South Carolina. Sophomore outside hitter Molly Pyles averaged 5.57 kills and 3.00 blocks per game as the UNC volleyball team topped ACC rivals Duke and Wake Forest on the road to improve to 25-2. She also hit .304 over those two matches.
