Jones Named ACC Player of the Week & To Soccer Buzz Elite Team Of The Week

Oct. 28, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina freshman forward Courtney Jones has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week following her performance in the second-ranked Tar Heels' 5-1 road win at seventh-ranked Virginia.

Also on Tuesday, Courtney Jones was named as one of the 16 players nationally chosen for the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week. This was the freshman forward's second selection this year to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week.

Jones had two goals and one assist in last Friday's match as UNC broke open a scoreless tie with five second-half goals to remain unbeaten in ACC play. The Danville, Calif., native assisted on the first goal of the game in the 51st minute, then added two goals of her own just 4:59 apart in the 73rd and 78th minutes as the Tar Heels increased their lead to 4-0. Jones ranks second on her team in goals scored (9) and in points (21.)

The Tar Heels (15-1-1, 8-0) play host to second place and fellow top-10 nationally-ranked foe Florida State (13-2-1, 7-1) in a key match Thursday night. Other ACC women's action that evening finds Clemson at Maryland, Duke at Virginia, Miami and NC State and Wake Forest at Virginia Tech.

All of Thursday's matches are set for 7 p.m. starts. The North Carolina-Florida State, Clemson-Maryland, Duke-Virginia and Virginia Tech-Wake Forest matches will be shown via webcast on ACC Select.
