2008 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA WOMEN'S SOCCER GAME NOTES FOR VIRGINIA GAME
North Carolina (14-1-1) at Virginia (12-2-1) CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina women's soccer team (#2 NSCAA, #4 Soccer Buzz, #5 Soccer America) will continue conference play Friday with a game against another consensus Top 10 foe as the Tar Heels meet Virginia (#8 NSCAA, #7 Soccer Buzz, #7 Soccer America) at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. Game time is 7 p.m. EDT and the game will be webcast live on ACC Select. Live stats will also be available on CBS College Sports Online Gametracker. The two teams are within one game of each other in the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference standings. North Carolina is currently 7-0 in the league standings while Virginia entered this week tied for second in the standings with Florida State with both teams at 6-1. Those three teams (UNC, UVa, FSU) have pulled away from the rest of the pack in the ACC entering the final two weeks of the regular season with fourth place Virginia Tech seven points (11) behind both Virginia and Florida State (18). Overall, North Carolina is 14-1-1 this season while Virginia is 12-2-1. NORTH CAROLINA NOTES *Junior forward Casey Nogueira is tied for fifth this week in goals per game in NCAA statistics with Notre Dame's Kerri Hanks. Both Nogueira and Hanks are averaging 1.063 goals per game with 17 goals in 16 games played. Michigan State's Laura Heyboer started the week as the leader in the NCAA in overall goals with 18 while Nogueira, Hanks, Georgia State's Kay Harbrueger and Milwaukee's Sarah Hagen are tied for second in overall goals with 17. *Nogueira is tied for seventh this week in average points per game in NCAA Division I with 2.44 points per game, again tied with Notre Dame's Hanks. Both players have 39 points overall with 17 goals and five assists. Laura Heyboer of Michigan State leads the NCAA with 44 total points, followed by Kay Harbrueger of Georgia State with 41 points and Hanks and Nogueira with 39. *Tar Heel junior forward Nikki Washington headed into this week tied for 17th in assists per game with nine assists in 15 games for an average of 0.60 per contest. *In 16 games this season, Carolina has already exceeded its statistics for total goals, total assists and total points from the 2007 campaign. In 24 games last season, UNC had 56 goals, 49 assists and 161 points. Through 16 games this season, the Tar Heels have totals of 58 goals, 62 assists and 178 points. *Carolina has spread the wealth around in game-winning goals this season seven players accounting for the 14 game-winners. Freshman forward Courtney Jones leads the Tar Heels in game-winners with four while Casey Nogueira is second with three and Nikki Washington and freshman Merritt Mathias each have a pair of game-deciders. *Carolina has the fifth best winning percentage in the country so far this season at .906, a 14-1-1 record. Notre Dame, Stanford, UCLA and Portland rank 1-2-3-4 in the nation in winning percentage. Notre Dame is the nation's only unbeaten and untied team at 16-0 while Stanford (14-0-1) and UCLA (13-0-2) are also unbeaten teams. *As a team, the Tar Heels are currently the nation's highest scoring team with 58 goals in 16 games for an average of 3.63 goals per contest. Charlotte is second with 3.53 goals per game. The Tar Heels have 58 overall goals, two more than Oklahoma State's 56. The Tar Heels are 30th in goals against average at 0.678 goals per game. The Tar Heels have allowed 11 goals in 16 games. Carolina is tied for 23rd in shutout percentage at 0.563 percent. The Tar Heels have recorded nine shutouts in 16 games. *Carolina has opened up the conference season with seven straight wins, outscoring opponents 29-6. Since a tie at Stanford in the sixth game of the regular season, the Tar Heels have run off 10 wins in a row. *UNC currently has won 15 successive ACC regular-season game since a loss at Miami (1-0) on September 30, 2007. *Carolina has an all-time record of 130-7-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season games, a winning percentage of 0.939 percent. *Casey Nogueira has scored 17 goals this season, four more than she scored in her first two seasons combined as a Tar Heel. Nogueira now has 30 career goals and she has moved into a tie for 30th place in Carolina history with Lori Chalupny (2002-05). *Senior midfielder Yael Averbuch has scored five goals this season, giving her 31 in her career. Averbuch is now tied for 27th place in Carolina history in goals scored with Jo Boobas (1983-86) and Anne Morrell (2001-04). *Carolina players have accounted for four hat tricks this season, twice as many hat tricks as Carolina had in the 2006 and 2007 seasons combined. Casey Nogeuira has had hat tricks this year against Wake Forest (October 5) and against NC State (October 17), the latter being a four-goal game. UNC's other hat tricks this season have come from Tobin Heath against Clemson (September 25) and by Courtney Jones against Maryland (September 28). In 2006, UNC had only one hat trick--by Yael Averbuch against UNC Asheville on November 10, 2006. In 2007, UNC again had only one hat trick--by Casey Nogueira against Ohio State on September 20, 2007. *When Casey Nogueira scored four goals in UNC's 5-0 win at NC State on October 17, it marked the first time a Tar Heel player had scored four goals in a game since October 14, 2003 when Lindsay Tarpley had four goals in a 6-0 win over Wake Forest at Fetzer Field. *Carolina has opened conference play with seven straight wins, outscoring opponents 29-6. UNC has scored at least three goals in each of its first seven ACC games *When Carolina won at Clemson by a 5-2 score on September 25, the Tar Heels had a historic offensive output for themselves at Clemson's Historic Riggs Field. The five goals were the most UNC has ever scored in a match played at Clemson. *Carolina's five-goal margin in a 5-0 win against Maryland on September 28 was the most lopsided victory for the Tar Heels against Maryland since a 6-0 victory over the Terrapins on October 29, 2000. *Carolina 5-0 win over NC State on October 17 was the most lopsided win by the Tar Heels over the Wolfpack since the Tar Heels beat State 6-0 on October 15, 1997 at Fetzer Field. *The five goals scored by the Tar Heels at NC State October 17 equaled the most the Tar Heels have ever scored in a game against State that was played in Raleigh. Carolina scored five on September 21, 19994 in a win at Raleigh 5-1. *In his 30th season as head coach, Anson Dorrance carries a 662-33-20 all-time record into the match at Virginia. Carolina's average record per year is 22.1-1.1-0.7 per season. *UNC opened ACC play with a hat trick in each of its first two games. Tobin Heath had a natural hat trick in the win at Clemson as she ran off three goals in succession in the first half after Clemson had taken a 1-0 lead. Courtney Jones had a hat trick in the win over Maryland. The freshman forward scored two goals in the opening nine minutes of play and then added an early second-half goal to finish off her hat trick. *Since Virginia became a varsity program in 1985, the Tar Heels and the Cavaliers have met 34 times with the first meeting on October 29, 1985 in Charlottesville. North Carolina leads the all-time series 32-0-2. *Casey Nogueira was named ACC Co-Player of the Week this past Tuesday after a four-goal outburst in a 5-0 win at NC State. Nogueira assured herself of her third career hat trick with three goals in the first 28 minutes of the game. She then added her fourth goal of the game early in the second half.
