Defender Whitney Engen led Carolina to a pair of women' soccer wins at the
St. Mary's Classic and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for
August 31-September 6, 2009. The senior from Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.,
was the Most Valuable Defensive Player of the 2009 Inn at St. Mary's Soccer
Classic as No. 1-ranked North Carolina recorded a pair of shutout wins over
No. 2-ranked Notre Dame 6-0 and Marquette 1-0. Engen played all 180 minutes
in the two games as the Tar Heels limited their two opponents to 21 combined
shots. Carolina has now recorded four successive shutout wins and the Tar
Heel defense has not allowed an opponent goal in the past 363 minutes and 21
seconds.

North Carolina tailback Shaun Draughn rushed for 118 yards on 20 carries, an
average of 5.9 per carry, in a 40-6 victory over The Citadel. Draughn led
Carolina's 261-yard rushing effort, the highest total for UNC under head
coach Butch Davis. It was Draughn's fourth career 100-yard game and his
second-best career total.
NORTH CAROLINA'S DEFENSE
In a 40-6 win over The Citadel, North Carolina's defense allowed just 30
rushing yards, the fewest allowed by a Tar Heel defense since NC State
gained only 13 in 2005. The Tar Heels had 10 tackles for losses, two sacks,
forced four turnovers, broke up three more passes and limited The Citadel to
153 total offensive yards. Linebacker Quan Sturdivant led the team with
seven tackles, safety Deunta Williams picked off two passes, defensive back
Charles Brown had five tackles and an INT, and defensive end Robert Quinn
had a sack and forced a fumble.

Melanie Brill, a senior back from Oley, Pa., scored twice as No. 4 North
Carolina defeated No. 2 Wake Forest Friday evening in a nonconference
contest in Chapel Hill. Brill had the Tar Heels' first goal of the night, on
a penalty stroke in the 18th minute of play that put UNC up 1-0. With the
Tar Heels leading 2-1 in the second half, she gave her team a two-goal
cushion with another goal, this time on a penalty corner, in the 50th minute
of play. Brill has a team-high three goals this season for the Tar Heels
(3-0), who play at Davidson on Tuesday.

Cameron Brown keyed No. 1 North Carolina to an outstanding offensive week,
as the Tar Heels outscored their opponents by a 10-1 margin en route to a
2-0-1 record and the Carolina Nike Classic title. The Garland, Texas,
product was at his best in Sunday's win over Evansville when he recorded his
first career multi-goal game. Brown buried a 30-yard shot into the left side
of the net to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, and he
followed that up with a highlight-reel bicycle kick goal from 16 yards in
the 85th minute to secure the Carolina Nike Classic crown on goal
differential. Brown's two goals Sunday give him eight for his Carolina
career.

Freshman Emily McGee, named to the Best Western Shocker Classic
All-Tournament team, led North Carolina to an important victory over
Oklahoma this weekend. After the Tar Heels dropped the first two sets of the
match, McGee posted 12 kills in a pivotal third set to lead Carolina from a
come from behind victory over Oklahoma. McGee finished with a game-high 18
kills and 23 digs in the match against the Sooners. McGee registered all 28
of her kills this weekend in the Best Western Shocker Classic averaging 2.80
kills and digs per set, while hitting at a .250 percentage.
