CHAPEL HILL --- Former University of North Carolina women's soccer player Keath Castelloe Low (left) has committed $100,000 to the Tar Heel program to establish the Keath Castelloe Low-Endowment. Interest from the endowment will supplement areas of financial need in the women's soccer program.

The gift is made as part of the Carolina First campaign, the University's campus-wide fundraising effort.

Head coach Anson Dorrance, the women's soccer coaching staff and the current student-athletes recently established a list of the program's 11 core values. Castelloe Low's name will be associated with the following value: "We care about each other as teammates and human beings."

One member of the women's soccer team who exemplifies Castelloe Low's core value will be selected each year and that student-athlete's name will be added to a plaque in the McCaskill Soccer Center.

"I can't think of a better individual to represent that core value than Keath because she lived by those words when she was a Tar Heel," says Dorrance.

"My family and I wanted to honor Coach Dorrance for the life lessons he has shared with the other Carolina players and me," says Castelloe Low. "Providing the funding for this endowment is a way we can give back to the program and a way for us to recognize the spirit of Carolina women's soccer. It was a privilege to play for Coach Dorrance and it is an honor to share this core value."

Castelloe Low was a defender on Carolina's soccer teams from 1984-87. The Raleigh, N.C., native attended Hale High School and walked on the UNC program. She eventually earned a starting role, was co-captain of the 1987 NCAA championship team and was invited to play in the United States Olympic Festival.

"Keath represents everything that is good about college athletics," says Dorrance. "She was hard-working, strong and determined. She did not come to Chapel Hill on an athletic scholarship, but improved her game to the point where as a senior she was an elite player. She's even more of an amazing person."

Dorrance says the endowment is important to the future of the program.

"It is critical for us to build the endowment to maintain our operating expenses," says the coach of the 18-time national champions. "This fundraising effort is paramount if we want to compete at the level we have enjoyed over the last 25 years."

Dorrance and the 2003-04 Tar Heels created the list of core values based on leadership/success quotes and experiences they have shared over the last 25 years.
