Women's Soccer To Battle Carolina Courage On Tuesday
April 1, 2002 CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina's women's soccer team will take on the Carolina Courage of the WUSA in an exhibition match on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Fetzer Field. UNC went 24-1 in 2001, spending all of the regular season ranked #1 in the country, with its only loss coming to Santa Clara in the NCAA Tournament final. The Tar Heels won their 13th consecutive ACC title, beating Florida State 4-0. Head coach Anson Dorrance was named the National Coach of the Year by Soccer Buzz and All America midfielder Jena Kluegel was a Hermann Trophy finalist. The 2002 Tar Heel squad will be without several key players from 2001. Kluegel, first team All America defender Danielle Borgman, forward Anne Remy and goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett will all be lost to graduation. Kluegel, Borgman and DePlatchett were all drafted by WUSA teams. However, UNC will return first team All America Catherine Reddick and third team All America and ACC Tournament MVP Alyssa Ramsey, as well as second team Freshman All Americas Anne Morrell and Sara Randolph. The Tar Heels will also add the nation's top recruiting class for the 2002 season.
The Courage is coming off a 6-12-3 finish in its inaugural campaign. Several UNC alumnae can be found on the Courage roster, including former Tar Heel standouts Staci Wilson, Carla Overbeck, Tiffany Roberts, Nicole Roberts and Nel Fettig.
